Germany and Luxembourg

Believe it or not, over Easter weekend Chad got a four day weekend! And so did almost all of Europe I think. We took advantage of this and rented a car to do some sight-seeing. We left Friday morning, and Lincoln was a happy boy eating peanuts in his car seat. Zalie, however, is not used to the car seat since she hasn't used it in 3 months. We hope she learns to like it soon.

We drove about 3 hours and stopped at the Eltz Castle near Trier, Germany. It is still inhabited by the same family that has lived there since 12th century. It's surrounded by the Elzbach river and we had to hike to get to it. The castle was not in view until the very end of the hike, so that was pretty neat. We kept wondering if we were in the right spot. It was awesome!

We then stopped over in Immerath where our airbnb place was. It was actually very nice, other than not having internet like it said it would. After that we drove into Trier and wandered around the city for a few hours. The downtown shopping area can be located through the Porta Nigra, which is the largest Roman city gate north of the Alps according to wikipedia. Definitely a cool way to enter the square!

Lincoln really wanted to stand on this after
seeing a lady take a pic of her dog on one.

One of the shops in Trier.
We then checked out the Roman Imperial Baths. They were being restored, so we did not actually see much. They looked cool through the fence though. Of course, Chad found some graffiti to photograph, and Emily found a cute duck family.

9 ducklings!
The next day, we drove into Luxembourg City, Luxembourg. It was a very cold, rainy day, but we were still able to do things. We started out at McDonalds so we could have internet. Then we went to the Luxembourg American Cemetery and Memorial. This is where Americans who died in the Battle of the Bulge during WWII were buried. It was a beautiful cemetery, and it really made us appreciate what so many have done to fight for freedoms around the world. General Patton, a famous WWII general was also buried there, because he wanted to be "buried with my men."

We then drove into downtown Luxembourg and enjoyed the views, shops, and statues. It was a very pretty city.
